Akron: The Cleveland Perspective

The earliest connection between the Akron and Cleveland was the Ohio and Erie Canal, which officially opened on July 4, 1827. Akron's various industries and Cleveland's shipping industry along Lake Erie benefited mutally from this early commercial connection. The train systems followed the canal and today's highway systems keep the connections strong. Visit Cleveland Memory to see photos that illustrate the intertwining history of Akron and Cleveland from a Cleveland perspective. The images were gathered from the Cleveland Press and the Bruce Young Collections at Cleveland State University's Michael Schwartz Library.
