Omega Psi Phi - Chicago Defender
Omega Psi Phi - Chicago Defender
TranscriptionOmega Psi Phi "It was the most stunning dance of the season!" That was the discerning observation of not merely one but every one of the four hundred or more guests who were fortunate enough to receive invitations to the annual spring formal of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity given last Saturday evening in the palatial ballroom of the Vincennes hotel. The dance, given under the joint suspices of the local undergraduate and graduate chapters, Iota and Sigma-Omega, respectively, was a toast to all Omegas of Chicagoland and their guests, which included several out-of-town parties. Once under way the dance began in typical Omega style, that is, with a bang. Dancing was scheduled to start at 10:30 but at the time the ballroom and lobby were empty except for the sweet, emanating music of Roberts' orchestra and the presence of eight pledges who were at their respective stations ready for duty; but just as soon as the clock neared 11:30 the hotel foyer was stampeded with guests pouring in from all parts of the city and suburbs. However, they were ushered orderly into the lobby by two pledges, directed by a third to the check room and checked off the guest list by a fourth by whose side stood an Omega member to extend a personal greeting to each guest. Then they were directed to the ballroom where they were presented programs by a fifth and sixth pledge and later, whenever they were so inclined served refreshments by a seventh and eight pledge. The reception of the guests clicked from beginning to end, a beginning that had no end for the pledges but reached its end at 1:30 for the fraternity reception committee which then relaxed its duties. The joint committee from the two chapters was headed by Lewis Redmond of Sigma-Omega and W.S. Townsend of Iota. They were assisted by James Hardaway and Dr. William J. Walker of the graduate chapter, and George King and C. R. Taylor of the undergraduate chapter. Copy as submitted to lynotypist for the Chicago Defender by Samuel Shepard. 1934
