| Title | Johnnycake Lock |
| Subject | Ohio and Erie Canal
|
| Description | Lock 27 in Everett, Ohio. Shortly after the opening of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827, a heavy rain washed mud and sand into lock 27. This temporarily closed down the lock, trapping a canal boat inside. While waiting for the lock to be fixed, the owners of the boat ate Johnnycakes (pancakes made from cornmeal). Since then, lock 27 has been known as Johnnycake lock. |
