DescriptionThis image was captured from the State Route 82 bridge over the Cuyahoga River Valley. The river is on the left and a feeder canal for the Ohio and Erie Canal is on the right. The strip of grass in the cener once served as the towpath. This area would later become part of Ohio's only National Park. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park was established in 1974 by an act of Congress. It is a destination for millions of visitors each year and preserves 33,000 acres along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron in northeastern Ohio. About Mr. SeiberlingJohn Frederick Seiberling, Jr. (1918-2008) was born in Akron, Ohio. In addition to his many accomplishments as a United States Congressman (1971-1987), conservationist, and law school professor, John Seiberling was an avid photographer and environmental steward. Mr. Seiberling took literally thousands of photographs during his personal and professional travels and often used his photographs to sway legislators to vote for the conservation issues that he supported. One of his many achievements was his major effort in 1974 to create and preserve the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area.
