About the U.S.S. AkronBuilt in Akron, Ohio in 1931, the U.S.S. Akron was used to determine the potential for rigid airships as Naval scouting fleets. On April 4, 1933, the U.S.S. Akron encountered a storm over the New Jersey coast and crashed tail-first into the sea. Only three of the seventy-six men on board survived the accident.
