| Description | The residence of Dr. Samuel W. Bartges, located on East Market Street, became the first City Hospital of Akron, Ohio. The hospital opened to patients on October 13, 1892. There were 22 beds and two private rooms for patients. Six attic beds were used by the nurses and servants. Rachel Simms, a graduate nurse, was named superintendent. |
