Schumacher Mill Fire, 1886
Schumacher Mill Fire, 1886
TitleSchumacher Mill Fire, 1886
Date1886
DescriptionFive hours before daybreak on March 6, 1886, dust exploded in a grain-drying house among his group of buildings at Broadway and Mill Streets. The resulting inferno raged for two days and destroyed every building except the Empire Mill and a new office. Schumacher's loss was reported to be $600,000. Without insurance, Ferdinand Schumacher was forced to obtain bank financing to rebuild. He received this financing on the condition that his company be merged with the Akron Milling Company and that the new company participate in a trust that would fix prices and control the entire cereal industry. In 1886, Ferdinand Schumacher became president of the new $2,000,000 corporation, which immediately joined the thirteen-member Consolidated Oatmeal Company (the "trust") of Illinois. This association became the American Cereal Company in 1888 and Quaker Oats in 1901.
