| Description | Samuel Alanson Lane (1815-1905) was Sheriff of Summit County from 1856-61 and from 1876-80 and Mayor of Akron from 1881-83. He is the Author of Fifty Years and over of Akron and Summit County. Born in Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut, Samuel Lane relocated to Akron in 1835 and married Paulina Potter on November 11, 1938. While working as a painter, he began publishing the controversial Akron Buzzard to speak out against various evils taking place in and around Akron. The paper remained in publication from 1837-39. He also published a temperance paper, the Cascade Roarer, from 1844-46. Samuel Lane became editor-in-chief and part owner of the Summit County Beacon in 1861, later transferring his interest in 1875. Hi wife Paulina died on July 2, 1871. Her sister Emeline (Potter) Manning became Lane's second wife on November 11, 1872.
