First Universalist Church - South Broadway and Mill
First Universalist Church - South Broadway and Mill
TitleFirst Universalist Church - South Broadway and Mill
DateApril 1891
DescriptionA Universalist Society was formed in Akron in 1836 by Major Minor Spicer, Dr. Eliakim Crosby, Watrous Mather, Henry Chittenden and Jesse Allen. Three years later they built the Old Stone Church on High Street, the location of Sojourner Truth's "And Ain't I a Woman?" speech. The Universalist Society sold the church to the Baptist Society in 1853 and a new church was constructed on the corner of Mill and Broadway. Financed in part by John R. Buchtel, Ferdinand Schumacher and Joy H. Pendleton, it was eventually sold to The University of Akron. A new church was constructed in Fairlawn in 1961 and the name changed to Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron. A drawing based on this image appears on page 197 of Samuel Lane's Fifty Years and over of Akron and Summit County.
