| Title | Airship - U.S.S. Macon Construction |
| Description | Unidentified men constructing the U.S.S. Macon. The U.S.S. Macon was built in Akron, Ohio by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation and christened on March 11, 1933 by Jeanette Whitton Moffett (wife of Admiral William A. Moffett). Although the Hindenburg was larger, the U.S.S. Macon and her twin sister, the U.S.S. Akron hold the world record for biggest helium filled airships. In 1935, Macon was damaged in a storm and lost off the coast of California. Unlike the U.S.S. Akron tragety, only two U.S.S. Macon crewmembers died. This was due to the introduction of life jackets and inflatable rafts. |
