TitleBalloon - Ward T. Van Orman
DescriptionWard T. Van Orman [1894-1978] with an unidentified man. Van Orman was a Goodyear balloonist. In 1926, he won the Gordon Bennett Races with his co-pilot Walter M. Morton. In 1928, a lightning bolt killed Morton in a balloon race in Pittsburg, PA. This experience led Van Orman to research the properties of electricity. Van Orman won the U.S. Gordon Bennett Races again in 1929 and 1930 with his co-pilot A.L. McCracken. Van Orman became an inventor and contributed to the Goodyear development of inflatable life rafts and bullet-sealing fuel tanks. He also created an electrostatic air cleaner, a massage mattress for the prevention of bed sores, and a new process of Braille study for the American Red Cross.
