About the CollectionEdwin Bell Howe, a descendent of the well known canal engineer Richard Howe, created hundreds of images of the Summit County area in the late 19th century. Mrs. Audrey Howe Cunningham, another descendent, managed to save 243 of his original glass plate negatives for many years. Her son "Buzz" Foster Cunningham obtained them for the Portage Lakes Historical Society more than 100 years after their creation. Although many of the negatives were broken or otherwise damaged, some have been used to create new prints and digital images. The digital images available in this collection were provided by R.C. Norris.
