| Description | A postcard of the Y.M.C.A. building at Bowery, Center and Water streets in downtown Akron, Ohio. Opening on August 4, 1931, the fifteen story Art Deco building was the tallest Y.M.C.A. in Ohio. The building offered many services to its members including a doctor, dry cleaner, barber shop, shoe shine stand, mail center, two restaurants, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, a spa, and a dormitory. In 1980, the Y.M.C.A. closed due to lack of members and funding. Also in this year, the building was put on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1986, a group of investors bought the Y.M.C.A. building and renovated it. It is now called the Canal Square Y.M.C.A . |
