About The CollectionThe donor, David P. Campbell, describes his postcard collection: My "gentle obsession" of postcard collecting began with a collision of two flukes in 1985. One was finding 50 – 100 postcards when moving my mother from her home of 35 years into a retirement home. The second was stumbling across a magazine, The Postcard Collector, a few weeks later. I have always been a very visual person, having a strong sense of curiosity about almost anything. Where else can you buy beautiful pictures covering a wide range of areas from art, music, politics, the military & religion? As well as weddings, funerals, athletic teams, choirs, geography & humor. Since I am a retired psychologist, a fascination for me has been postcards that show large groups of people having their photo taken. Postcards are a very interesting form of art as many cards prevail using many unusual materials such as silk, wood, copper, sand, feathers, human hair, embroidery or hand-drawn. Some of these cards are 80, 90 and even 100 years old! Many cost as low as $1 and some as high as $75 each, with an average price between $5 - $6. Postcard collecting is a great diversion while traveling the globe. Having amassed over 130,000 postcards today, I can say it is a "gentle obsession" indeed!
