| Title | Interior view of the Akron Water Treatment Plant in Kent, Ohio |
| Description | In 1910, Akron Mayor William T. Sawyer and the city council wanted to create a completely new water system. In August 28, 1911, an engineering team's survey report recommended that Akron buy land and builds a reservoir on the upper Cuyahoga River at a site just north of Kent. This would serve as the city's main water source with large pipelines running from the reservoir to Akron. Though costly, the process was sped up because during the summer of 1911, Akron was suffering from a typhoid epidemic that would kill 40 people before the summer ended. Price negotiations with William Kent to gain water rights resulted in Mr. Kent starting a suit against Akron. William Kent thought the price offered was laughable and feared the proposed reservoir would be a constant flood hazard. This suit went to the Ohio Supreme Court which was ruled on June 14, 1914, that Akron had the right to divert the water and that Kent and been offered a fair price for his land and water rights. William Kent had to sell at the prices originally offered. The new system went into operation on August 15, 1915 at Lake Rockwell. During 1915-1917, Kent city tried to buy water from Akron, but the price was considered exorbitant and negotiations dropped. |
