Crosby School
TitleCrosby School
DescriptionCrosby School, in Akon's Third Ward, was originally built in 1877 as an eight room school house. Significantly expanded in 1890s, it stood on the corner of Smith and West Street. It was named in honor of Dr. Eliakim Crosby, a founder of Akron. Dr. Crosby built the Cascade Mill Race, greatly enhancing Akron's ability to support early industry. The building was replaced in 1923 with a new school house. The school closed in 2005 and reopened as the Akron Alternative Academy. (Art Work of Akron, Ohio. pt. 9 pg. 3)
