| Description | Officers and sailors of squadron 653 of the USS Valley Forge. LCDR Cook Cleland (first row, center) was the commanding officer. The squadron was called to active duty in Korea in February of 1951. Cook Cleland's plane was hit by flak and was forced to land in Wonsan Harbor, Korea. He was rescued immediately by helicopter. Eight men from the squadron were killed in Korea, and two were captured and held prisoner until 1953. |
