DescriptionThe hydrogen balloon "A Century of Progress" piloted by Lieutenant Commander Thomas "Tex" Settle and Major Chester "Mike" Fordney prepares to take off for a world altitude record attempt from the Goodyear-Zeppelin Airdock in Akron, Ohio. At 9:30 AM on November 20th 1933 they took flight and eventually achieved a record altitude of 61,237 feet-a record which stood until 1935.
