A postcard showing Howard Street, looking south, in Akron, Ohio. Howard Street was Akron's main roadway in the 19th century. With the close of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal in the late 1800s, Akron's current Main Street was built over top of the abandoned canal. Main Street became the new thoroughfare in Akron, and Howard Street transformed into a unique multicultural district.
