improvement george sherry is head of tooling up at aircraft l djhjlrjk that's what one goodyear man did with result that he won big sum 1,000 w man who has held many important goodyear jobs b given new post a key job in industry is tool ing up particularly in america in any country where automo biles for instance are built largely by hand changes in de sign may be made overnight an american manufacturer how ever would have to spend sev eral months tooling up before he brought out a new model but once he got under way he could turn out cars tremendously faster than by the hand method today tooling up has grown more important in that hun tvhere is no priority on ideas no curb on thinking as has been demonstrated by hundreds of employes who have received big cash awards from goodyear for good suggestions butler doolittle former man ager of the sales promotion divi sion and now manager of the car and home supplies department also is a shining example of the worthwhile effort to don a think ing cap for he has been advised that he has been awarded a 1,000 war bond for doing some analyzing and thinking time magazine annually con ducts a contest in connection with its solicitation of subscrip tions in 1942 time sent eight letters to many thousands of prospects each of the series be ing assigned to certain names and addresses at the same time a copy of each letter was mailed to advertising men publicity men business and industrial executives asking for an analy sis of the letters and to specify which would pull the best re sults which would rate second third and so on down through the eight an equal number of each letter was mailed to pros pects so no one should have an advantage over others studies each carefully doolittle studied each letter carefully and submitted his an swer and as the saying goes he rang the bell or hit the bull's-eye for his judgment was 100 per cent correct as he specified the pulling power of each letter straight through from joint labor-manage ment war production drive group show the percentage of absentees remains unchanged since the first survey was made last august figures announced this week by the committee were for the period from december 14 to 19 inclusive and revealed 5.5 per cent of the employes were ab sent during that week the nor mal percentage of absenteeism for nationwide industry is con sidered 2.5 per cent the percentage over the nor mal figure resulted in a loss of approximately 18,000 man hours out of a potential 846,000 an amount which the committee considers not too bad on the basis of the nationwide average percentages in the various departments ranged from a low of 2.3 in mechanical goods preparation to the high of 12.5 in the balloon room both ex cusable and unexcused absences are included in the reports although the current report is virtually the same as the one submitted for the week of august 23 to 30 inclusive much room for improvement is seen in departments where habitual offenders have kept the absentee percentage at a high level it is this group of employes who are for the most part responsible for increasing the plant-wide average the committee pointed out that high departmental averages usually affect closely affiliated divisions sometimes necessitat ing short shifts which in turn reduce the earnings of fellow employes who are in no way re sponsible for the the goodyear foremen's club is planning to have some very interesting speakers for the meetings in january february and march the committee will announce the dates of the meet ings and the names of speakers in the clan can use two more men in orchestra two vacancies remain to be filled in the new em ployes activities orchestra which has been in rehear sal two weeks a bass vio linist and tenor
