windsor for the army completion of control car for a new navy airship boy scouts leaving for timagami goodyear girls trying pliofilm bags for their swim suits these reels issued monthly are shown in the dining rooms of goodyear's three plants in akron also at various outside goodyear plants and district of fices keep em flying fly to akron to complete training ready to take the civil aero nautics authority's examination for a commercial airship pilot's license are two californians who completed their training last week at wingfoot lake the young men are l e stilwill and w b purkiss who flew to akron from los an geles where they have been under the guidance of pilots art sewell and r h hobensack to take their 10 hours of required free balloon training using wingfoot lake as a base for operations purkiss and stilwill made seven distinct flights or landings and one solo flight of an hour's duration to compile a total of ten hours in the air both purkiss and stilwill have more than the required 200 hours of flying time at the con trols of an airship keep em flying jack williams carpenter shop is appreciative of the honesty of his fellow workers and wishes to publicly thank r a mcveigh welding shop for returning a wallet which jack lost recently the wallet had im"n given up for good when max returned the billfold with part of jack's pay keep em flying â€” â– craft will have 404,000 cubic feet capacity 80 miles an hour r^ieping pace with the rest of the defense industry in an all out drive for more and more production at aircraft another control car for an airship for uncle sam was rolled off the assembly line last week on schedule and transported on a huge truck to wingfoot lake where the 404,000 cubic-foot bag will be attached and the craft otherwise completed pride was reflected in the eyes of the builders of the cabin as it left the giant airdock building for their country's de fense they are staking their future with the future of their country â€” and they march with grim determination daily to meet it the cabin just finished toners more than twenty feet mm and with its motor iirrnts reaching out on either side makes the cabin as wide as it is high it is about thirty feet long the huge hull is for the first of six of the k-type blimps to be made at aircraft for use in long-range patrol duty by the navy range of 2,000 miles the k-type ships will have a cruising range of 2,000 miles travel at a speed of 80 miles an hour and carry a crew of eight men with heavy armament the envelopes for these big ships are fabricated in good year's balloon rooms already working to capacity on huge orders for barrage balloons the navy some time ago ordered two of the l-type ships and six of the k-type in line with extensive plans to set up a blimp patrol of america's coast lines to guard against subma rine marauders orders for more are in prospect using a good portion of the goodyear personnel the navy is speeding up its training pro gram at lakehurst to provide necessary crews for the many ships to be based in the lake hurst-cape may area norfolk va cape hatteras n c bos ton mass and san francisco calif aircraft will keep these blimps rolling out of the giant airdock and goodyear will play a prominent part in the pro gram to keep em flying i did you know 1 that if sheeting cover f ing structure of the air j dock were laid out flat it â€¢ would cover 18 acres ( picnic at high mill approximately fifty men of the curtiss-grumman depart ment with wives or girl friends attended a picnic at high mill park august 10 baseball cro quet and horseshoe pitching made up the entertainment program sandwiches and lem onade were the refreshments served upper hull for first of several k-type airships ready for removal to wingfoot lake lower on huge eight-wheel trailer the hull is on its way hans says america has em all eclipsed hans schlichting contours who spent some time abroad a few years ago says america in his opinion has all other coun tries backed off the map he went abroad for the continuance of his education spending a year at goettingen university in goettingen germany follow ing his graduation from the uni versity of akron in 1937 hans studied under a scholarship which he received through the institute of international edu cation and specialized in mathe matics while abroad hans visited paris vienna and northern italy while on the scholarship he had ample opportunity to practice his hobby of photo graphy but not much chance to play golf which he says is his other recreation our creed the skipper says i i believe in
