Pickets at Rose Hill / 2-19-57 / 4 col 2 star Tues / Beacon Journal Photo FEB 19 1957 / Delay One Burial At Rose Hill But Second Still Scheduled / A scheduled burial at Rose Hill Cemetery this morning was called off because pickets were posted at the gates of the burial park by Operating Engineers Local 821 . Another burial this afternoon was to be held as scheduled . Billo Co . employees are organized by Local 821 , the same local attempting to win union recognition for grave diggers and caretakers at Rose Hill . A Billow Co . spokesman said the burial of Sherman Jacobs , 69 , of 600 Inman st . was cancelled because the picket line was put up . The body was being held at the funeral home after services this morning . Another burial , that of Vernice M . Washer , 74 , of 309 Caledonia av . was to go on as scheduled at Rose Hill this afternoon . That service is being handled by Cox Funeral Home whose employees are not union members . Six grave diggers and caretakers at the cemetery struck this morning to back up demands for union recognition and a first contract . The union is asking for a $2 hourly wage , a 48-hour work week , time and a half for overtime , six paid holidays and health and welfare benefits . Meanwhile , Mayor Berg said he would instruct Health Director John Morley to keep in touch with the situation so that he could move in if any health problem might develop . Berg met with representatives of the Akron Federation of Labor and Local 821 . The union had asked the mayor to step in to help get negotiations started with cemeteries and funeral homes . "The only way I can get into this strike is if it should begin affecting the health of the people of Akron " Berg said . "Until that time , I am maintaining the most neutral ground I can find. " Atty . Robert Shuff , legislative representative of the Akron Federation of Labor , Thomas Arconti , federation vice president , and James Rogers , business agent of Local 821 , met with the mayor . Local 821 has been striking the Adams Funeral Home for the last several weeks . The Union representatives asked the mayor to have parking ban signs removed from in front of the funeral home . "We put them there to avoid trouble " Berg said . "I'm afraid of a disturbance otherwise. " Shuff said that by putting no parking signs in front of only the Adams home , the city is "pointing up labor trouble there. " A city ordinance bans parking in front of all funeral homes . However , the ordinance has never been enforced . Last week the signs were posted in front of Adams ' after three cars owned by the funeral home were reportedly damaged by being sprayed with a liquid that took the paint off . The union denied any connection with the incident .
