Interior photograph of the demolition of the Palace Theater in Akron , Ohio . The theater opened on April 26 , 1926 , and was the crowning achievement in local entertainment . "Akron's New Million Dollar Theater " a 2,200-seat venue , was the vision of department store executive Bert A. Polsky and attorney Harry E . Andress , who co-founded the Main & High Realty Co . to sell stock for the project . The Palace consisted of two buildings - a narrow arcade entrance off South Main Street and an auditorium between Maiden Lane and South High Street . The Palace ruled in Akron , Ohio , for three years , until Loew's Theater opened in October 1929 on South Main Street . Loew's was larger , more lavish and was competition for the Palace in the coming Great Depression . The Palace closed in 1966 after forty years of business . A broken water main flooded the lower levels of the theater in 1970 , making it too costly to repair .
