Akron-Summit County Public Library

Carnegie Library, Akron, Ohio The Akron-Summit County Public Library (ASCPL) provides resources for learning and leisure, information services, meeting spaces and programs for all ages that support, improve and enrich individual, family and community life. The Business & Government, Science & Technology and Special Collections Divisions at the Main Library are contributors to the project. Summit Memory is administered by the Special Collections Division of the Akron-Summit County Public Library.

Akron Banknotes Collection

More than 50 images of currency created during the "Main Street Banking" era when local banks issued money emblazoned with the names of their institutions. This private collection was loaned to the Special Collections Division.

Artwork of Joseph Jesensky

Nearly 150 images created by naturalist Joseph Jesensky. This collection was donated to the Special Collections Division by Maureen McGinty.

Canal Report for Summit County, Ohio, 1872

In 1872, the Ohio Legislature authorized P. H. Dudley, an Ohio Public Works Special Commissioner, to inspect the Ohio Canal. Mr. Dudley interviewed many millers, boatman and lock keepers about the Ohio Canal system. The complete report is available online but selected depositions related to the Summit County portion of the Ohio Canal can be browsed in this collection.

Ruth Wright Clinefelter Postcard Collection

Hundreds of postcards from the Akron and Summit County areas. This private collection was loaned to the Special Collections Division.

Shorty Fulton Collection

Images and historic documents relating to the Akron-Fulton Airport, the Rubber Bowl and the All-American Soap Box Derby.

Ott Gangl Collection

Includes 180 contemporary photographs of the Akron and Summit County area.

General Photograph Collection

This collection includes over 1,000 images of Summit County.

Paul Gramlich Collection

Includes 26 postcards depicting Summit County landmarks. These images are selected from the collections of Mr. Gramlich, a teacher in the Cuyahoga Falls Schools and a librarian at Taylor Memorial Library.

Inventors of Summit County Collection

In 1790 the US began issuing patents to encourage innovation by making it profitable for the inventor. Thousands of Summit County inventors were granted patents, and this collection contains more than 100 of the earliest patents issued to these inventors. The collection was contributed by the Science & Technology Division.

Jewish Community Board of Akron Collection

More than 70 images capture the history of a vibrant Jewish community in Akron. These images were selected from a collection donated to the Library by the Jewish Community Board in 2007.

Sherwood Kessell Collection

Donated to the Library by Sherwood "Woody" Kessell, this collection features postcards of various locales of Summit County with particular emphasis on the Portage Lakes area.

Samuel Lane Collection

Includes many original 19th century photographs created for Mr. Lane's Fifty Years and Over of Akron and Summit County history book.

Naval Air Station Collection

Images and documents of the US Naval Air Station based at the Akron-Fulton Airport during the Cold War.

Online Map Room

This collection includes historic maps and atlases of Akron and Summit County. The collection was created through a collaboration between The University of Akron Libraries and the Special Collections Division.

Portage Lakes Community Photographs Project

The photographs in this collection were gathered and digitized as part of a community photograph project hosted by the Portage Lakes Branch of the Akron-Summit County Public Library in partnership with the Portage Lakes Historical Society. Images in this collection are the property of community members who have granted permission to the Akron-Summit County Public Library and the Portage Lakes Historical Society to share their photographs digitally.

Rubber Companies Collections

The Firestone Tire & Rubber Collection, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Collection, B. F. Goodrich Collection and the Local Rubber Companies Collection contain newspaper clippings from the 1930s through the 1970s and were contributed by the Business & Government Division. These collections are only available for use inside Akron-Summit County Public Library locations.

John F. Seiberling Collection

Nearly 100 images of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park captured by Congressman Seiberling (1918-2008). In addition to his many accomplishments as a United States Congressman (1971-1987), conservationist and law school professor, John Seiberling was an avid photographer and environmental steward. In 1974 he sponsored legislation to create and preserve the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. This collection is selected from Mr. Seiberling's larger collection of photographic slides held by the Special Collections Division.

Tallmadge History Collection

Drawn from the Frank E. Lawrence Collection housed at the Tallmadge Branch Library, this collection contains more than 90 images of the hundreds of items in the Lawrence Collection documenting the history of Tallmadge, Ohio.

The Times They Were A-Changin': Akron Remembers 1968

Images and audio excerpts recalling a pivotal year in Akron history. The excerpts were taken from oral history interviews collected as part of a collaborative project of the Akron-Summit County Public Library and Dr. Gregory Wilson and students enrolled in his Fall 2008 course on public history at The University of Akron. This collection was contributed by the Special Collections Division and the Akron Beacon Journal.

Trucking History Collection

More than 100 images from a larger collection donated to the Library by the Pioneer Motor Traffic Club. These images celebrate the trucking industry and Akron's role as the birthplace of the motor carrier industry.

Turkeyfoot Lake Collection

Images selected from a larger collection donated to the Library by the Turkeyfoot Island Club. The Turkeyfoot Island Collection includes photographs of the people, land, lakes and buildings of Portage Lakes, primarily of the 20th century, with particular emphasis on Turkeyfoot Lake.

Wingfoot Clan Newsletters:
Aircraft Edition (1941-1945), Akron Edition (1939-1946)

The Wingfoot Clan Newsletters were published by the Goodyear Company in Akron for their employees. They contain information about scientific and manufacturing advances as well as the social news of the day. This collection was co-contributed by Archival Services, University Libraries, The University of Akron.
