Archival Services, The University of Akron

Wingfoot Clan newsletter Archival Services, a division of University Libraries at The University of Akron, collects, preserves, and provides access to primary and secondary source materials that document the history of The University of Akron and the region. Archival Services consists of two major divisions: University Archives and Special Collections. University Archives contains historical records of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions from its founding in 1870 to the present time. Special Collections consists of the rare book collection, regional history collections, and other special collections. Regional history collections include historical materials such as personal papers and records of local businesses and organizations. Strengths of the regional history collections include the rubber industry, Ohio canals, and lighter-than-air flight.

Archival Services also serves as a local government records repository for a nine county region, which includes Summit, Ashland, Holmes, Coshocton, Portage, Richland, Stark, Tuscarawas, and Wayne counties. Archival Services is open to the public 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday and is located in the lower level of the Polsky Building in downtown Akron, Ohio.

Opie Evans Collection

Includes 125 photographs selected from the Opie Evans Papers held by Archival Services, University Libraries, University of Akron. The images were taken or collected by Evans and provide a rich visual history of the African-American community in Akron, Ohio and surrounding areas during the middle of the twentieth century. They also capture the 1964 and 1967 elections and the civil rights movement in Akron, Ohio.

The Wingfoot Clan Newsletters were published by the Goodyear Company in Akron for their employees. They contain information about scientific and manufacturing advances as well as the social news of the day.
